This latest album of 30 original, solo guitar pieces can be taken in as one continuous work, or each composition appreciated individually. It is an inner study in a world of increasing externals. Meant for deep listening in the foreground.
Once again another year’s worth of guitar has come around in our little hooded crow mountain zen retreat snug on this beautiful forgotten and forbidding coast, and from what and where did it emerge? Was it the Wild Atlantic? Was it the song thrush outside our window each morning? Was it the friendship and community of the sessions? Was it the morning words and sounds coming from the wisdom of those who came before us? Was it from meditating with the elders? Was it from touching the stones of megalithic Iveragh? Probably a bit of all that and a few additional things that I myself brought to the table resulting in 13 new tracks in pursuit of sound, beauty, and possibly something else for sure…… to be seen, heard, and consumed by all who witness without prejudice, for there is a type of composition in the discovery and finding, and another type of composition in the asking. This I do know: Love brought us here and love keeps us here. The guitar is my orchestra…. Nothing more and nothing less. So it is with sincere gratitude and with all the great questions that I submit this latest work for your ears. Towards Light is an album of introspection. 22 tracks both composed and discovered, both planned and spontaneous in differing proportions. It is the music of one who has long since stopped shouting at the world. The first track, “Menkelinan”, is named for a 570 million year old star that will eventually become the brightest star in our sky some 990,000 years from now, just to set the timeline. It ends with the title track, written for friends, about letting go of the physical realm. In between are homages, remembrances, tributes, and experiments to make what I believe is my most accessible album to date. Thanks for listening.
